Meu Caras!

Okay, I've been bad, no updates for a week... but oh what a busy week it's been. I spent the birthday in Rio last week and had a *fabulous* time. I took a tour of Rocina, the biggest favela in Brazil (250,000 people!) to Tijuca forest - the larges urban rainforest in the world (read: temperate, not tropical) and then up the Corcovado to the Christ the Redeemer statue and the brilliant view of the city. Rio is absolutely gorgeous. Green and vibrant with a huge lagoon and beaches everywhere. I spent some time on Copacobana and Ipanema and at night I went to the Plataforma for the well touted "Braziliero Folklore Show" which was fun, if a bit like Carnival-Meets-Vegas. I saw a demonsatration of capoeira, which is a martial art that was turned into a dance at the height of the Brazilian slave trade. Portuguese plantation owners didn't allow the slaves to practice fighting for fear of an uprising and so they stylized it into a dance that from the look of things could be deadly if someone was off by half a beat. They do these astounding feats of acrobatics too. There were drummers and lots and lots of Carnival costumes - Feathers flying everywhere! In parts of it, especially near the beginning some of the imagery was a bit disturbing, but then at the end it got a bit cheesy. Still a fun night all around. I had dinner at a churasqueira, and had delicate creamy deserts in lieu of birfday cake. Nummy.

I went on Tuesday night to one of the Expat's birthday party at a little club called Monstre - where a live band named MaryHelp was covering mostlyMerkan music, the lead was a cutie and actually avery good singer. He has another band called Flöw (He's the one in the hat on the far right), which I'm going to drag everybody to in March when they come to Toronto. We danced and drank sex on the beach and stuff. Was a lot of fun. Tonight? Videoke at Opera Lys. Another one of the Expats going home tomorrow, and we're sending him off in off-tune style.

On the work front, I finally got one of my projects done, and am trying to sort out the rest. It's hard trying to work between 3 cities. I think I'll be going to Macaé in a week or so... woo! Ocean! (and not much else. :P)

Tchau, todos.
